TRIPOLI CITY TOUR (Half
Day Tour)
Your tour commences with a drive towards the towards the Green Square,
where you shall visit the "Assraya Al Hamra", the Red Castle that houses
the National Museum in the "Serail". Exhibits date from prehistoric
times, through Libyan tribal history and include an impressive
collection of mosaics, statues and artefacts from the classical period
of antiquity. You
also have the chance to admire examples of Islamic architecture and
folklore exhibits serving as a recollection of traditional life. Over
the centuries, the Red Castle has developed into a citadel, boasting a
labyrinth of courtyards, alleyways and houses. You tour this fascinating
area, before being lead towards the Medina, the old part of the city.
The Roman Gallery is the finest in the entire Museum and is divided in
three. One section is devoted to Leptis Magna with rows of statues and
large mosaics. Another has its floor covered with a beautiful mosaic
from Roman Oea. The final section is devoted to Sabratha. There are many
highlights in this room which demands that you quietly sit and take it
all in.
In the Medina, you shall delight in the souks, and you will view the old
hotels known as khans, the small squares, traditional houses and a
string of mosques, the largest and unquestionably most beautiful of
which is the "Ahmed Pasha Karamanli" mosque.
You will pass by the imposing Italian church; the Gurgi mosque and
finally you arrive at the Arch of Aurelius. This majestic arch was
erected in honour of the emperor Marcus Aurelius and it has quite
miraculously managed to stay intact to this day, as the inhabitants of
Tripoli were firm believers that as long as the arch remained
undamaged, their town would survive.
From here you will board the coach that will drive you back to the ship.
